Denarius of Domitian

Silver denarius, 17mm, 2.99gm, issued AD 80. Rome mint.

Obv: CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII, Laureate head facing right.

Rev: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS, Goat within laurel wreath.

The goat depicted is the she-goat goddess, Amalthea, who nursed Zeus as an infant. As Zeus grew up to become king of the gods, this type of coin reflects that Domitian would live a similar future to Zeus'.
