Aulus Vitellius was governor of Germany. After Galba was murdered in 69, the German legions proclaimed their commander Caesar and marched on Rome. Although they defeated Otho, Galba's 'successor', the Eastern legions had proclaimed Vespasian emperor. Vitellius was only emperor for months before Vespasian's forces defeated him.
