Tetradrachm of Bithynia, Nicomedes IV

Silver tetradrachm, 32mm, 16.11gm, issued 93/92 BC.

Obv: Diademed head right.

Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ EΠIΦANOYΣ NIKOMHΔOY, Zeus Stephanophorus standing left, eagle on thunderbolt before, EΣ at feet.

Year 205 of the Bithynian Era. Nicomedes IV was the son of Nicomedes III. Througout his reign he was troubled by the aggressive policies of his neighbour, Mithridates VI who invaded his kingdom twice. When Nicomedes died he bequeathed his kingdom to Rome and it became a province.
