Trajan's adoption by Nerva brought him the throne and his aggressive campaigns in Dacia and the east won much new land for the Empire. A popular emperor with the military and the people and the senate, he reigned for nineteen years before dying of illness. His adoption of Hadrian on his deathbed was deemed controversial and not always accepted
