Probus

M. Aurelius Probus
Augustus (AD 276-282)  |  De Imperatoribus Romanis entry

Marcus Aurelius Probus was another Emperor who hailed from the Balkans. He was one of the foremost generals during the reigns of Claudius Gothicus and Aurelian. On the death of the Emperor Tacitus (276 AD), Probus had to contend with Florian, the half brother of Tacitus, for the Purple. Probus won, and reigned for six years - proving to be a strong leader who aided the recovery of the Empire in these dark years. He was murdered, however, in 282 by mutinous soldiers at Sirmium, his birthplace
