Sestertius of Balbinus

Bronze sestertius, 30mm, 23.06gm, issued AD 238. Rome mint.

Obv: IMP CAES D CAEL BALBINVS AVG, Laureate, draped bust facing right.

Rev: CONCORDIA AVGG (SC in ex.), Concordia seated left holding patera and double cornucopiae.

Scarce.

Balbinus and Pupienus were the joint emperors chosen by the Senate in April 238 to lead the defence of Italy against Maximinus. After rioting they were forced to accept Gordian III, the young grandson of Gordian I, as their colleague as Caesar. Further trouble spurred the Praetorian Guard to murder both emperors in June and Gordian III was hailed as sole emperor.
