The Emperor Hadrian travelled the provinces of his empire in at least three great journeys. Between AD 130 and 133 a series of coins were issued in gold, silver and bronze commemorating his travels. They belong to four broad types. 1. Province only. Reverses depicting a personification of the province either reclining or standing, with devices particular to that province and the name of the province in the reverse legend. 2. Adventus Reverse depicting the emperor standing clasping hands with the personification of the Province and the reverse legend "ADVENTVS" and the name of the province. 3. Resitutor. Reverses depicting the emperor standing raising up the kneeling personification of the province with the legend "RESTITVT" and the name of the province. 4. Exercitus. Reverses depicting the personification of the armies of the province with the legend "EXERCIT" and the name of the province. These coins were only issued in bronze. Other coins, such as the Liberalitas and Adventus types issued on his returns to Rome as well as the Oceanus and Galley types are sometimes included in collections of Hadrian's Travel Series.
