Several series of coins were issued under the Roman Republic and Roman Imperial periods honouring and namely certain legions. The first was by Mark Antony prior to the battle of Actium in 31 BC. The second series was issued under Septimius Severus in AD 193 in gold aurei, silver denarii and bronze sestertii. The third series was issued under Gallienus AD 260/1 in silvered antoninianii. The reverses usually depict the eagle and standards, although Gallienus' series depict the animal emblem of the named legion. The reverse legend is usually "LEG" with the number and/or abbreviated name of the legion.
