Augustus (AD 96-98)

Nerva was an elderly senator appointed emperor in the confusion following Domitian's murder (although he was probably complicit in the conspiracy). His regime was threatened by the Praetorian guard before he was forced to adopt M. Ulpius Traianus, the commander of the Rhine legions. He died of old age shortly afterwards
