C. Julius Verus Maximinus
Augustus (AD 235-238)Maximinus was a common soldier who hailed from Thrace. He was popular with the rest of the rest of the troops and famous for his bravery. In AD 235 they decided they would prefer someone of his calibre in place of their 'namby pamby' Emperor, Severus Alexander, who appeared to be under the thumb of his mother. They murdered them both and appointed Maximinus as Emperor. Maximinus reigned briefly, and never managed to visit Rome, either out of deliberate policy or being unable to escape the pressure of the northern frontiers. He despised the Senatorial classes and made life so difficult for them that they first supported the old rebel Gordian I in Africa and, when he was killed, appointed two of their own, Pupienus and Balbinus, to rule jointly in opposition to Maximinus. Maximinus invaded Italy in AD 238 and was killed
