Gordian I

M. Antonius Gordianus

Dynasty: Gordians

Augustus (AD 238)

Unreliable sources claim that Gordian was a distant relation of Trajan, although there is no evidence of this. He was governor of Africa when the Senate proclaimed him emperor in rebellion against Maximinus. Unfortunately Africa had no legions and the Governor of Numidia was loyal to Maximinus and so invaded the province. The elder Gordian committed suicide when he heard of the defeat of his forces
