Augustus (AD 37-41)

The third emperor of Rome, Julio-Claudian dynasty. Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, nicknamed Caligula (= little boots) was born in 12 BC, youngest son of Germanicus and Agrippina the elder and adopted grandson and heir of Tiberius. Assassinated in 41, his short reign was characterised by excesses and debaucheries. Guided by Antonia, the matriarch of the Julio-Claudians, he showed promise in his first months of rule but later in AD 37 fell seriously ill and afterwards became insane
