Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus

Dynasty: Tetrachy

Galerius was Diocletian's Caesar in the Tetrarchy, and married to Diocletian's daughter, Galeria Valeria. On Diocletian's retirement in 305 AD, Galerius became Augustus. Although technically junior to his counterpart, Constantius, Galerius in fact had more power as it was his adherents, Severus and Maximinus, that were promoted to the vacant Caesarships. On Constantius' death in 306 AD, Galerius had to deal with the disillusioned youths Constantine and Maxentius, both sons of former Augusti, but left out of the Tetrarchy. After Severus' death, the crisis forced an urgent meeting of current and former rulers at Carnuntum in 308 AD. The result was another win for Galerius, with one of his drinking buddies, Licinius, elected as his partner in the West. However, Constantine and Maxentius continued to cause trouble. Galerius encouraged Diocletian's persecution of the Christians, but in 311 AD, on his death bed from a terrible wasting disease, he renounced his policy. He died with the Tetrarchy in tatters
