Constans

Flavius Julius Constans

Dynasty: Family of Constantine

Augustus (AD 337-350)

Constans was the youngest son of Constantine. When Constantine died, in AD 337, he divided the empire between his three sons and some of his nephews. However, the army immediately murdered Constan's cousins, declaring only the sons of Constantine could rule. Constan's jurisdiction was over the middle section of the empire, between his brother Constantine II in the West and his other brother Constantius II in the East. In AD 340 after a disagreement with Constans, Constantine II invaded his territory. Constans successfully fought him off, and Constantine II died in battle. Constantius and Constans divided the empire between them, and Constans reigned for ten more years, until he died in AD 350 after a revolt by Magnentius
