Aelia Verina
Dynasty: Family of Leo
Augusta (AD 457-484)Verina was the wife of Leo I the Isaurian and was a virulent opponent of her son-in-law Zeno becoming emperor after her husband died in AD 474. With the help of her brother Basilicus she organised a revolt against Zeno, who fled Constantinople in AD 475. Verina's choice for his successor was her lover Patricius (the Magister Officiorum) but Basilicus took the throne and had Patricius executed. Verina then supported Zeno's return in AD 476 but remained under suspicion. She organised another revolt under Leontis but the rebels were defeated and she died shortly afterwards at the fortress of Papyrius in Isauria. Coins with the portrait and name of Verina on the obverse are very rare, even in bronze.
