Stater of Britain, Durotriges

Bronze stater, 18mm, 3.07gm, issued 30 BC - AD 10

Obv: Abstract head of Apollo right.

Rev: Disjointed horse left.

References: Van Arsdall 1290.

Rare in this condition.

Struck with common Durotriges type, derived from a long ago type of Philip II of Macedon. Found near Blandford, Dorset. The Durotriges occupied Dorset and some of Hampshire and Wiltshire in the south of England. The tribe would have occupied the Maiden Castle hillfort when it was taken by Vespasian during Claudius' Invasion of Britain.
